Fire Rated Screen – Design Compliance
Design compliance should be done by a competent person with extensive (7 Years or more) experience in the field. FSA is in this field of expertise since 2011.
Design criteria includes but are not limited to the following information:
• Are these screens positioned as internal or external?
• Height of screens above finished floor level (FFL)?
• What is the overall size of these fire rated screens?
o Structural split beam necessary?
o Expansion joints necessary?
o Glass size limitations allowance?
o Test limitations?
• Are these screens positioned along the fire escape route?
o How many people will be evacuated along this route?
• How many of these people are office personnel?
• How many of these people are visitors to the building?
o How many of the office personnel received evacuation training?
• Are these doors specified as fire escape doors?
o Special evacuation ironmongery necessary?
o Amount of people that will be evacuated through these doors?
o Area space (amount of people) beyond these doors?
o Stampede / hold up prevention?
o Are there any staircases beyond these doors?
• Would these screens be installed into brick, steel or concrete?
o Is brickwork solid or hollow?
o Is steel work load bearing?
o Does re-enforcing in concrete allow for fixing details?
o Compensation necessary for concrete deflection?
• Are these screens specified for the insulation requirement as well?
o Evacuation requirements?
o Spectator windows?
• Are there ceiling void cavities above these doors & screens that needs to be closed up?
• Fire side versus non-fire side? What is on either side?
These are just some of the questions that should be asked & answered before FSA would start with design.
