Fire Rated Screen – Classification Criteria

There are 4 criteria in transparent fire rated screens, of which 2 are always applicable:

    •  Integrity (E):

            •    Prevention of flames, gas and smoke passing through gaps in the structure during a fire event.

            •    Does NOT prevent heat transmission during fire event.

            •    Always applicable – Specified as E60 / E90 / E120.

    •  Stability (R):

            •    Resistance to collapse during fire event as a result of the heat, whilst maintaining performance.

            •    Support own weight and can withstand / hold during fire event.

            •    Always applicable – Specified as E60 / E90 / E120.

    •  Insulation (I):

            •    Restricts temperature rise to the other (non-fire) side during a fire event.

            •    Temperature may not rise above 140 oC plus ambient temperature on average or 180 oC plus ambient maximum.

            •    On request only – Specified as EI60 / EI90 / EI120.

    •  Radiation (W):

            •    Maintains all integrity performances of E and provides heat resistance, keeping the amount of radiation heat transfer to below 15kW/m2

                 on the unexposed side, when tested 1000mm away.

            •    On request only – Specified as EW60 / EW90 / EW120.

There is no certification for transparent fire rated doors available in SA.

Thus, all doors are imported.

An imported door with locally supplied 6mm Pyran “S” glass, will be classified as a class “C” door only, due to no insulation properties present in the glass or framework.

To have a class “A”, “B”, “D” or “E” door with insulation properties, both door and glass will be imported. Glass will be between 12mm and 60mm thick depending the required rating.

Local Product – Uninsulated

Our locally manufactured products are NOT insulated.

They are specified as E60/E90/E120 only:

    •  Windows:

            •    500mm x 500mm – Minimum size.

            •    1200mm x 2000mm – Maximum size.

    •  Doors:

            •    Single door – 1200mm x 2200mm – Maximum size.

            •    Door & half – 1600mm x 2200mm – Maximum size.

            •    Double door – 1800mm x 2200mm – Maximum size.

    •  Shopfronts:

            •    Combination of door and window panels.

            •    Wide variety of different assemblies.

            •    Possibilities are endless.

    •  Facades:

            •    Height:

                        •    Screens are 4000mm maximum:

                        •    Could go higher if structural split beams are added in-between.

            •    Width:

                        •    Screens are modulated at 1200mm c/c:

                        •    Compensation after every 5 modules.

            •    Possibilities are endless.

Imported products – Insulated / Uninsulated

Frames could be specified as E60/E90/E120 minutes.

They could be insulated (EI) or uninsulated (E).

Possibilities as per locally manufactured screens are endless.
